You're not storing a digital file on the AP-8, you're making an audio copy of it.  That said, it's best to start with the highest possible quality from the beginning, as you will suffer some sampling rate loss in the recording process.  I tend to use WAVs as my output (they're not compressed), but MP3s are fine too, so long as they were recorded at a reasonable bit-rate and aren't already exhibiting aliasing (that hollow, tinny sound you notice when MP3s are compressed too much).
